Recreating the scene of Simon’s death in Lord of the Flies
Lord of the Flies is a well-known novel, written by William Goldings. It illustrated the bunch of British boys accidentally stranded on a desert island, during the time of being trapped, the author shows the most intriguing side of human beings. Which is dark, wild, ad savagery. Simon, one of the kindest and smartest boy among all, was mistakenly being thought as the imaginary beast. And was tragically being killed by the boys, this action has being known as a representation of the evil side of human.
Simon’s death appeared in Chapter 9- A view of death within the novel. Simon unfortunately has became the victim during the part where the boys lost their mind and control, eventually descend into savagery of human nature.
Characters within the novel that is included in this incident are Jack, Ralph, Piggy, Eric, and Sam. There’s also some littluns involved, but due to less existence, they aren’t included within the recreation.
As I stated above, to provide a clearer description of the scene in the story. After founding out that the beast they claimed was a dead parachutist hanging on a tree, Simon ran down the hill in order to tell others about the truth. He accidentally got trapped in a circle of boys, who was chanting “Kill the beast, cut his throat, spill his blood.” They have mistake him for the imaginary beast they are afraid of, since there’s no such thing. Due to panic, they rush at him, hit him with their hands or simple weapons. Thus, I chose to recreate the scene of Simon’s death. Looking at my video. At first, we could the boys in a circle, moving their hands up and down continually while repeatedly saying the chant. Later, Simon walks into the camera, warning the boys about the parachutist. They boys reacted with shock and fear, shouting out some British slangs. Jack led the group to rise up and hit Simon with fists in both hands. Afterwards, Simon who was originally stand up, appeared dead on the ground.
Simon’s death in the novel is a crucial part that shows the boys have became completely wild and losing their innocence. It issued as a a turning point where rules broke down and savagery took over. The scene convey the dark side of human nature and how quickly people can descend into evil when civilization don’t exist. Thus it emphasizes a theme, which is the rise of savagery and the fall of civilization, contributed a important part in the story.
Though I’ve already done with my midterm exam, which consisted the understanding of Lord of the Flies, I still feel it was a great opportunity to enhance my acknowledgement of it, and deepen my comprehension of its theme, allegory, and representation. This project taught me to improve my skills in storytelling and edit skill, especially when it comes to digital. I’ve learned about moving joints of each characters, I tried plenty times till I got it right, which is sometimes quite irritating. Nevertheless, I still really enjoy this experience, I gradually become more familiar with the features, tools, scene setting, and environmental effects in order to make a great animation.
In conclusion, recreating Simon’s death in Alice 3 helped me improved my skills in digital animation, while also giving me a deeper understanding of the novel’s themes and allegory. Connecting both literature and computer science together, expanded my cognition to all.
